How Stump Grinding Works
A grinder has a spinning wheel with carbide teeth. The operator sweeps it side to side across the stump, lowering it a few inches each pass.
The wood becomes mulch. Most crews grind four to eight inches below the ground, deeper if you want to plant a tree in the same spot.
What It Costs
Many companies price by stump width at the widest point, with a minimum charge for one small stump. Several stumps in one visit cost less each.

Ask What Is Included
Ask whether the price is per stump or per inch, whether it grinds below grade, and whether chip cleanup and haul away are included. Stumps left after a tree removal are often not in the removal price, so ask before the tree comes down.
Before the Crew Comes
- Call 811 so buried lines are marked, since grinders cut several inches down
- Tell the crew about sprinklers, fences and lights nearby
- Remove rocks and metal near the stump if you can
What Happens to the Mulch
You will have a mound of wood chips and soil. Leave it to rot down, spread it as mulch (not piled against other trees), or ask the crew to haul it.
Filling the hole with topsoil and seed or sod is usually extra, and the spot settles over a few months.
